Old
& In the Gray first surfaced at David Grisman’s Birthday Bash
concert in San Francisco in 1996 as a very special bluegrass reunion
of the members of the legendary bluegrass band Old & In the Way.
Since then, they’ve continued to reunite at select festivals and
venues with original members David Grisman, Vassar Clements and Peter
Rowan, accompanied by longtime associate Herb Pedersen filling Jerry
Garcia’s spot on banjo and vocals and Bryn Bright on bass in place
of the late John Kahn. Their first studio album, Old & In the Gray,
was released in October of 2002 to immediate critical acclaim and reached
Top Ten chart positions on the Billboard Bluegrass, Americana Music
Association and IBMA charts.
"The 1976 Old & In the Way
album probably turned more people on to bluegrass that any other album.
At least more Deadheads. It spurned the whole hippy bluegrass movement,
and continues to be one of the greatest live bluegrass albums ever made."
